In recent years, the rise in popularity of skateboarding and other individual action sports like biking, skiing, snowboarding, roller skating, and rock climbing has resulted in a powerful response from the Greater Rochester region. The opening of Rochester's downtown Roc City Skatepark alone has made headlines for promoting healthy living, diversity and pride in our community - that is an amazing thing!

For many years, our area has been recognized as one of the most underserved areas in the country for action sports. Recently, the building of new skate parks in Greece, Sweden, Medina, and Fairport have been funded by large grant organizations representing millions of dollars poured into Western New York action sports initiatives. Our region is responding to a big need in tangible ways.

Now, skateparks, bike trails and ski slopes are packed with record numbers of young people that need the influence and message of Jesus. These kids are certainly being influenced. Skate shops, skateparks and municipalities are already busy organizing camps, competitions, and special events. This is a good thing. But how are God's people responding? How does the Church of Rochester plan to get involved?

The vision of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is "To see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes." Imagine the impact of godly mentors present at the parks and in the lives of these kids and young adults.

As an avid skateboarder, skier and snowboarder, I've seen the affect of a positive word or simply by being present. I've seen lives changed and hearts transformed because of the special bond that these sports provide. Sure, my nickname in the community is "Rusty Bones." Because I'm a bit older than most skaters. But I wear that with pride knowing where those relationships can lead.
